Doing the work is the success in itself. I was reading an article this morning when I came across that quote. It resonated with me because apart from feeling like I’m struggling to succeed, like everyone else, I’m building an e-commerce company in a largely distrustful society. I know, what a dreamer right? Anyway, this is where I would cook up a fictitious story about how a person made decisions and finally succeeded in the end but that’s the problem with my generation, we have social media now and so we tend to glorify the results of success without acknowledging and studying the process of success.
A short real-life story if you may. I was walking back after getting dinner the other night and I decided to branch a friends room, catch up and stuff. It’s always a jolly time when we meet up but that’s the problem, it’s always only a jolly time. Now, most people think I’m uptight and too serious but the truth is I’m still a child inside and I love a good time as much as the next guy. I think it’s either Jim Rohn or Les Brown that said you cannot gain momentum if your force and velocity remain the same. Oh wait, that was Newton 🤦🏾. Doesn’t really matter who said it, what matters is that
In order to be great, you have to do better and you can’t do better if you are not “bettering”, everyday.
I know I digress a lot but to cut my story short, I realised that the time I used in jollying could be used for reading or writing, and so I had to do better. I knew I was on the right path when a friend asked me why I no longer hang around the guys who still like having a “good time” and I blurted “I had to give that up” with a smile.
That story inspired me to write this article, I know well within me that there are things I still need to give up but that is what I call the process of success, it doesn’t happen at once. I have had to give up a lot of things and I am willing to give up more if it means I will eventually become the man that can and deserves to achieve my dreams.
The process of success is the success itself and I don’t care what you want to achieve, you are going have to give up something to get there, I have curated the most popular things we have to give up and I’ll be sharing them with you, for free, because I love you and I want you to achieve your dreams.
Wish for a quick buck
Self-indiscipline
Time unconsciousness
Poor reading habit
Not writing your ideas down
Self-doubt
Fear
Ingratitude. etc.
But apart from these things, there is one important thing you have to give up for your dreams and that is the old you. In Christianity, we call it carrying your cross. You will have to drop your pride and fear of criticism and live your truth. “Nobody wants to be seen as weird” a guy once told me. It was obvious he wanted more from life but his pride and fear of criticism were holding him back and it made me think,
people say there are two people you should never lie to, your lawyer and doctor but I say there are two people you can never lie to, your creator and yourself.
I’d love to ask you this question,
Do you want it bad enough to give up those things holding you back?
Or give up those people holding you back. For some of us, it’s that someone is making us live the life we don’t want to. Studying a course we dislike, working a job that drains us, living in an environment that takes more from us than gives to us. Above all, the greatest opposition to our success is FEAR. I would like to talk about it but here’s a link to a more insightful piece on fear.
What are you prepared to give up for your dreams?
If you read up to this point, I want you to know that you’re doing amazing already. It’s not easy to survive the trials of this world and I appreciate you for holding on but it’s time to stop playing defence. You need to launch an all-out attack on life because that is the only way you will win. Wake up every day with a purpose, plan your day, work your plans and if they don’t work out the way you want, learn, iterate and repeat until life has no choice but to pay you what you’ve earned.
