“The world is upside down Sunny. I don’t think it pays to be a good person.” That’s a line from Gringo, a movie I saw last night and one I recommend. I’ve always seen myself as a good person, just like every other human. In our world, a good person is anyone that doesn’t judge another, anyone that is perceived to be kind, anyone that doesn’t seek revenge, anyone that cares for others. By those standards, I could qualify as a good person but does that mean I deserve a hitch-free ride on earth?
Anyway, the inspiration to write about this subject came from a dream I had a few minutes ago. Yes, it’s about 4:30am and I can’t sleep. In my dream, it was evening and I was at a food court, operated by a familiar face. Like every other person, I was there to get something to eat and don’t worry I didn’t eat in my dream. While I waited for my meal to be ready, a young girl came around the court and asked for some money to eat. Nobody answered her except me, probably because I’m the protagonist here. In real life, I’d give her enough for a full meal but in my dream, I brought out 80 and I said: “get bread for today, I’ll give you more when I come tomorrow.” Having the ability to discern, I saw so many meanings to this and if I start listing them, you won’t get a chance to read this whole article.
So, to save your time, here are two things to take from my dream
1) No other person answered this young girl in need, even though they could afford it, or maybe they couldn’t. Isn’t it funny how easy it is to be a good person in this world? imagine if everyone there had contributed their part to help that girl, she would have gone home well fed. What do you have to contribute to making this world worth living?
2) I only gave her 80 and to some this is okay. In a way, I gave her something right? But did I give her all I had? I don’t know, am I giving my best to my world? Are you giving your best to this world? Yes, you’re doing more than your peers and friends and it’s a consolation but with everything you were given, are you doing your best for your world? Those people that we celebrate today gave life 100% of what they had/have and you can too.
Nigeria and Africa, in general, has a lot of people in poverty and that girl from my dream could literally be a real person. Feeding her for a day is not bad but what else can you offer her? Can you build an orphanage or a school by maximizing your potentials? Being a good person means that you have to give up some things for people that can never pay you back. It means that you will go through things that will make you want to quit. Being a good person means you may have to plant your lemon trees, reap some lemons and make lemonade so the underprivileged can benefit from your goodness.
You were blessed with opportunities, intellect, creativity and passion for something. Use everything you have to make this earth habitable for others because, in the end, we are all we have. I know it’s hard but there are millions of underprivileged people waiting for you. The purpose of living a good life is to help others and I believe you are a good person.
Bad or Undecided, you have the potential to be the best person this world has ever had. Be kind to yourself, be kind to others and give life 100% of your yourself.
What did you learn from my dream? it’d be an honour to hear your thoughts in the comments section.
